The Discovery Child Development Center is located on the College of the Siskiyous (COS) campus in Weed, California. It is a Head Start/ State Preschool/ College of the Siskiyous Collaborative program serving children ages three to five. Shasta Head Start is the providing agency and is a large program serving around 700 children in three counties with total combined funding totaling 12,000,000. per year. The mission statement says; " Shasta Head Start, a non-profit agency, is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young children, one family at a time. We provide opportunities for education, parenting support and resources to families in our communities." The Discovery Child Development Center, were I teach, enrolls 20 students, and employs three fully qualified staff, one cook and many work study students. Our program is free for qualifying families who must meet income guidelines or have a disadvantage of some kind to receive priority enrollment. The Discovery center serves as the campus Lab School where the COS early childhood education students can do their coursework while learning in a supervised, hands on environment. We use the "Creative Curriculum" as well as "Second Step", "Healthy Beginnings", and "weaving language". We provide a developmentally appropriate preschool learning environment; we believe that children learn best when playing in a well prepared learning environment. We honor parents as primary educators and encourage parent and community involvement. The Discovery Center is fully licensed and NAEYC accredited. We have a "Certified Mentor teacher" onsite.
